LMPD's Lead-Free Firing Range Opens

by Gabe BullardA new firing range for the Louisville Metro Police Department is now operational. The $1.4 million facility is double the size of the previous firearms training center. In addition to new target practice technology, the facility uses lead-free ammunition, which Sergeant Ed Goins says is safer for range officers."We have to regular lead tests to make sure the lead in our blood is not above, or gets to, a level that is dangerous for us and we get that done 4 times a year," he says. "And obviously, if it comes to a point where our lead level increases too much, we're pulled off the range."Goins says no range officers have been pulled due to high lead levels, but cleaning the old facility and testing workers was expensive.
