Meth Busts Up In 2009

Methamphetamine production in Louisville and Kentucky increased dramatically in 2009 and that has a Louisville narcotics officer calling for a change in state law. There were 146 meth lab busts in Louisville last year…that's up from 93 the year prior. Across Kentucky, 716 labs were found, setting a new record for the state.Kentucky tracks the sale of the cold medicine ingredient pseudoephedrine, which is used in meth production. Sergeant Stan Salyards with the Louisville Metro Police Department says tracking helps police find the labs, but it doesn't keep producers from manufacturing the drug."The way people are getting around that is they're having three or four different IDs, so they're able to obtain that much more pseudoephedrine. Also, they'll send a group of individuals in to buy just under the limit," he says. "They know they can stay under the limit."Salyards says he would like to see Kentucky follow other states and make pseudoephedrine a prescription drug. There have been 12 meth labs found in Louisville so far this year.
