Indiana Officials Launch "One Test, Two Lives" Campaign

In conjunction with World AIDS Day today, Indiana state health officials launched a campaign to encourage expectant mothers to get tested for HIV.Kristi Montgomery is the HIV Care Coordinator for the Indiana Health Department. She says they’re taking the opportunity to educate doctors and patients about state testing recommendations.“The code is intended as an opt-out," says Montgomery, "so basically the woman is provided the education and then she signs a release and does an opt-out if she chooses not to participate in getting an HIV test.”Gwenda Bond with the Kentucky Health Department says there are similar advisements in Kentucky.If a woman is found to be HIV positive, Montgomery says with appropriate intervention and therapy, most HIV-positive pregnancies can result in a baby that is not infected.
