MAS Audit Reveals Major Bookkeeping Errors

An internal audit of the relationship between Metro Animal Services and private Louisville adoption agency reveals problems with keeping track of animals, contracts and safety issues. Animal Services had been working with Animal Adoption Agency for less than a year.Metro Animal Services spokesperson Jackie Gulbe says they aren’t worried about the audit’s report.“We were very pleased with the results of the audit," says Gulbe, "it shed some light – you know, no one’s perfect – it shed some light on some of our shortcomings.”The audit revealed the two entities weren’t keeping track of the animals, and noted that ‘some animals couldn’t be physically verified’. There were also problems with proper payment to MAS for adoptions; in some cases the Metro department was never paid.Gulbe says the department hopes to learn from its mistakes.“It’s become crystal clear how important the proper staffing is," says Gulbe, "not that we didn’t know that before, but it just become completely obvious that we have to have people very focused and committed in regard to relationships like this.”The audit also revealed the contract between MAS and AAA was invalid and that some MAS employees drove vehicles that required a CDL license without such a license.Gulbe says they are ending their relationship with Animal Adoption Agency.
