Rand Paul Enters Senate Race

From Kentucky Public Radio's Lisa AutryBowling Green eye doctor Rand Paul says he will seek the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Jim Bunning. Paul officially declared his candidacy Wednesday, ending months of speculation.Paul has been considering running for weeks, but he was reluctant to run against the 77-year-old Bunning, who announced his retirement last week.Paul is the son of Texas Congressman Ron Paul, who ran a failed bid for the Republican nomination for the presidency last year.Rand Paul says he expects to have a well-financed campaign."I traveled both the state and the country over the last year with my father's campaign," he says. "We have hundreds of thousands of people who follow our movement on the Internet, and we think we can raise the $2 million that I estimated is necessary to run a competitive Republican primary race."Paul says he will campaign on the platforms of limited government and fiscal discipline. Paul's U-S Senate bid will be his first run at public office. He will face Secretary of State Trey Grayson and Todd County businessman Bill Johnson in the Republican primary.
