The state’s head statistician thinks next year’s census may be beneficial for Kentucky and states in the South.
Ron Crouch of the Kentucky State Data Center says preliminary studies have indicated population shifts toward the region.
“Virtually all the domestic growth of people moving from one state to another is taking place in the south alone, the west is growing maybe because of immigration, and the northeast and Midwest are having major population shifts leaving those areas, so we’re seeing a major transition in where people are living and where people are working," says Crouch. "So that may be good news for us in Kentucky and the south, but if you don’t count them, they’re not there.”
The census is used to determine federal funding for local communities and congressional districts.
The survey will take place next April. Crouch spoke on WFPL’s "State of Affairs".
