Area Fire Departments Receive FEMA Grant

Twenty area fire departments will share a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.Fire departments in Jefferson County and Southern Indiana will use the 1.7 million dollar FEMA grant to buy new communications equipment. The devices will track firefighters' locations across each department and send distress calls to every agency if needed.Louisville Fire Chief Greg Frederick says the equipment will be useful if, for instance, a firefighter from Louisville responds to a fire in Indiana."When he arrives on the scene of an incident, the command computer that's in place will automatically show him as being there," says Frederick. "Not only will we use this in major incidents but we'll also use it day to day."The FEMA grant is supplemented by 437 thousand dollars of local funding.
