Abramson Praises Stimulus Plan In Pre-State Of The City Address

Listen to the whole speech here.In a precursor to his annual state of the city address, Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson discussed why

Metro Government is facing budget shortfalls, and how he hopes to remedy the situation. When he was asked how the city could have laid out a budget last year that led to a $20 million shortfall, Abramson said his team could not have foreseen the jump in unemployment that started last fall.“If people are working, we’re rocking and rolling. If people aren’t working, if layoffs are occurring, if businesses are shutting down, it affects us just like that. I mean just like that," said Abramson. "And that’s exactly what’s happened. And the second quarter has come in and it has brought us right in line the same way.”Abramson said 16 thousand jobs were lost in Louisville last December. He also voiced his support for the federal stimulus package, which he said will create jobs and tax revenue for the city. The mayor made his remarks to a meeting of the Metro Democratic Club.
