New Homelessness Report Shows Dramatic Increase in Kentucky

A new report out today from the National Alliance to End Homelessness says Kentucky’s homeless rate grew more sharply than any other state’s between 2005 and 2007. Kentucky’s homeless rate skyrocketed by more than 60-percent in that two-year period. The organization’s vice-president, Steve Berg, says they aren’t sure why Kentucky’s rate increased so dramatically."Sometimes its just a matter of people do a better job of counting, so the number’s higher, but other times there are changes in the community that really have made the problem worse, so we’re going to be looking into that as best we can," says Berg.Other states with high increases were West Virginia, Tennessee and Maryland. The report was compiled with statistics shared by Louisville’s Coalition for the Homeless. That organization is set to release its numbers for 2008 by the end of this month.
