A Jefferson circuit judge will hear arguments in the Engine 7 Firehouse dispute Monday.Residents of the Old Louisville neighborhood are asking the judge to re-open the facility, which closed Sunday as part of the city’s efforts to deal with a budget shortfall.Fire Chief Greg Frederick says Old Louisville is served by six nearby fire stations. But Engine 7 employee Jon Lucas says the area’s dense population needs extra protection.“The hazards present in that area require faster response times and more personnel," he says. "So I think the coverage in Old Louisville is probably exactly where it needs to be right now.”Frederick says officials took Old Louisville’s population into account when they decided to close Engine 7.“When you look at from a perspective of the date, the modeling software, the other resources and the way our units are spread out in the rest of the Urban Services District, it’s what we have to do to be cost-effective and to continue to be efficient," he says.Frederick says if Engine 7 is re-opened, personnel will have to be cut to save money.
