West Main Street Wins Award, Fights Economy

On the heels of national recognition, Louisville is working to keep West Main Street vibrant in the sagging economy. This week, the American Planning Association named the section of Main Street one of the top ten great American streets. The association noted the revitalization that occurred since many businesses left downtown in the 1960s.But the national economic downturn has taken its toll on that momentum. Main Street Association president Jack Guthrie says market shakeups in the 70s stalled development, and that will likely happen again now.“Obviously the economy has slowed things up, whether it be the Museum Plaza or whether it be Iron Quarter," says Guthrie. "But I think the investment is still there we just have to wait through and fight our way through this economic problem.”Guthrie says he’s confident development will resume once the economy stabilizes.
