There’s just over a week left in the Every1Reads fundraising campaign for Jefferson County Public Schools. JCPS and Greater Louisville, Inc. officials will announce the results of the campaign next Tuesday. The fundraising arm of the campaign got a boost Monday when the Churchill Downs Foundation donated 100-thousand dollars to the program, which matches students with volunteer tutors to improve reading skills. The goal of the program is to get all students up to grade level proficiency. JCPS Superintendent Sheldon Berman says it’s working."The number of students reading at or above grade level has improved from 81% to 91.5%," says Berman. "Additionally, the number of students progressing to reading proficiency has moved from 44% to 63.7%."The program’s four year fundraising goal is eight-million dollars… officials also hope to have 10-thousand volunteer tutors within that time. JCPS officials will announce next Tuesday how they did on those goals.
