KY To Install New Cable Median Barriers

Five more sections of interstate highway in Kentucky have been chosen to receive new cable median barriers. The barriers are made of three metal cables, designed to prevent crossover collisions. The new cables will cover just over 44 miles of roadway, mostly on I-65 between Jefferson County and Bowling Green. Ten miles of median barrier will be put up along the Gene Snyder Freeway between I-65 and Dixie Highway.Kentucky Transportation Secretary Joe Prather says the state has some work to do before installing the new cables.“Federal dollars are involved and of course we, to be prudent, have to have a design team now put together to be sure we have the right strength on the right terrain." says Prather. "So that’s going to be the initial process. It’ll probably be several months before you’ll actually see them on the ground.”The cables are being paid for with $10.8 million in federal transportation funds. They’re already in place along stretches of Interstates 64 and 71.
