Governor's Scholar Program Marks 25th Year

The Governor’s Scholar Program for Kentucky high school students is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.The program selects top students for free, five week academic session at a Kentucky college or university in hopes of preparing them to be the next generation of civic and economic leaders.    Sessions will be held this summer on three campuses, including Bellarmine University in Louisville.The program has grown from 230 students in 1983 to about 11-hundred this year.Secretary of State Trey Grayson graduated from the program in 1989 and now serves on its board of directors. He says the state’s financial woes have affected enrollment this year.“We did have a budget cut and we have a hundred or so scholars this fewer," says Grayson. "The program was cut 12% for this coming year. We’re part of that four and a half percent that’s being studied, but that’s where the private funding comes in.”Bellarmine’s session begins June 15th. The other schools hosting sessions are Morehead State and Centre College.
