Historical Marker To Be Placed At Braden Home

A historical marker will soon stand outside of the west Louisville home once occupied by the late civil rights activists Anne and Carl Braden.Metropolitan Housing Coalition director emeritus Suzy Post says her organization took steps to have the marker placed after learning the property would change hands.“When her son, who lives in California, put the house up for sale, we decided we couldn’t let it be sold without making some kind of gesture to demonstrate for history what kinds of things and people lived there and the battles and struggles they became involved in," she said.The Bradens were lifelong activists, but drew national attention in the 1950s when they circumvented segregation laws by purchasing a home for a black family in an all-white neighborhood.This year marks the 40th anniversary of the national Fair Housing Act that made segregated neighborhoods illegal.
