Rains May Delay Planting Season

Kentucky’s planting season for corn and soybeans could be pushed back because of last week’s severe weather.Heavy rain and slight flooding has left fields near rivers and tributaries waterlogged. That, combined with an already wet fall and winter could make it hard for farmers to plant their crops next month.Rick Lasher with the National Weather Service says so far March has been wetter than previous years, but growers typically plan for some extra rain before planting begins.“March is normally our wettest month so we would expect in a normal year to have good soil moisture and abundant rain,” he says.Lasher says this year has been dramatically wetter than last year, when a drought hurt corn and soybean yields.
