Federal Homeland Security Grants Go To MetroSafe

The Kentucky Department of Homeland Security has awarded one-point-five million dollars to Louisville’s MetroSafe communications system. The emergency response system is in the midst of a technology upgrade. MetroSafe Director Doug Hamilton says most of the money will be spent on equipment."Right now we’re in Phase Three of a four phase project. Phase Three means that we’re building our radio infrastructure, the thirteen towers located throughout Jefferson County that will give us the signal strength and the coverage that we want. We expect that to be done in the next 12 to 16 months," said Hamilton.He says the crucial factor in the new equipment will be the ability to communicate between agencies from within Louisville and even with agencies outside Louisville.Some of the money will be used to purchase alert systems to better notify the area’s first responders when there’s an emergency.
