Most Recent Dog Ordinance Still In Effect

As attorneys ask for clarification of a court ruling this week, Louisville’s most recent animal control ordinance is still being enforced.Circuit Judge Martin McDonald’s ruling definitely overturned two previous versions of the ordinance passed in late 2006 and early 2007, but attorneys on both sides of the case have asked McDonald to clarify if he intended to strike down the most recent ordinance passed just over two months ago.Jefferson County Attorney Irv Maze says the city will still enforce the third law, which he predicts will be challenged if it remains in effect.“I gave up a long time ago predicting if I was going to win," says Maze. "We’ll present our best case. We feel like we have a defensible ordinance. We feel like it was properly enacted and we feel that it should be enforced.”Judge McDonald issued his ruling in a suit filed by the Louisville Kennel Club and the Kentucky League of Sportsmen. The metro council began discussing tougher animal control legislation after two people were killed in dog attacks.The judge could consider the motions for clarification as early as Monday.
