Matt Anthony's Top 10 Albums of 2014

10. Joan Shelley - Electric Ursa
Her album captured the dreamy powerful presence of one of Louisville's most compelling voices.

9. Duck Sauce - Quack
The absurdist dance duo of Armand Van Heldon & A Trak continue to come up with fun songs to fill dance floors worldwide. It's way smarter then they let on.

8. The Pass - High Road
Sharp lyrics and intelligent infectious melodies keep one of Louisville's bands on the rise. Their creativity at this point seems boundless. Becoming the best band of the '80s and '90s that never was.

7. The New Basement Tapes - Lost on the River
A record that couldn't fail. Assemble this generation's best creative singers and have them add their flavor to unreleased Dylan lyrics. No brainer, of course it's great.

6. Spanish Gold - South of Nowhere
My version of a supergroup comprised of My Morning Jacket, Grupo Fantasma & City and Colour. A sexy soulful take on '70s radio rock. The record's vibe is impeccable.

5. Wu - Tang Clan - A Better Tomorrow
The Wu has always been a rap group devoid of gimmicks or polish. Their straightforward purist East Coast sound is the reason 20 years later they are still the most important rappers alive.

4. Lake Street Dive - Bad Self Portraits
LSD's breakout record, we will know these young musicians for years to come. Pop artists with Jazz chops. Their powerful live shows win over all who witness them.

3. VA - Jazz From Finland 2014-2015
Full of names I could neither say or spell. From straight ahead Be - Bop to electronic experimentation to soul and swing influenced Jazz this beautifully packaged CD is the perfect overview of the vibrant Jazz scene.

2. Budos Band - Burnt Offering
The modern kings of cinematic soul have always exposed their love for Doom Metal and Black Sabbath but until their 2014 album never achieved a perfect balance. If Fela Kuti and Ozzy Osbourne had a very ugly baby it would be Burnt Offering. Brilliant.

1. VA - Northern Soul The Movie Soundtrack 7" Box Set
Released in Britain this year Northern Soul The Movie tells the story of the sub culture of ravenous rare Soul fans that pack pubs and ballrooms in the north of England in all night long vinyl dance orgies. The soundtrack features some of the most expensive, hardest to find Soul gems, issued as a 7" vinyl box set, it has sent DJS and fans into ecstatic rapture. I bought it solely for my holy grail record the Velvets "I Gotta Find Me Somebody" and have found it full of new favorites and Soul Dance fire power that I will DJ with till I go to the great dance floor in the sky.
