Robert Curran is out as the artistic director of the Louisville Ballet.

His resignation was announced via a news release Thursday.

Curran has been in the role since 2014.

“Reflecting on my time in Kentucky will always fill me with appreciation for the invaluable experiences and breathtaking artistry we created together,” Curran said in the release.

The release said during his time at the Louisville Ballet, Curran's inclusion of artists from outside the United States brought more diverse and innovative works to the company.

It also highlighted his work to bring classics to the stage in new and inventive ways.

“Long after his departure his talents will continue to have an impact here in Louisville and we look forward to building on that foundation,” Ralph De Chabert, president of the Louisville Ballet Board of Directors, said in the release.

Curran was at the helm of the Louisville Ballet through the pandemic and its return to in-person shows.

In April 2020, Curran said the ballet made staffing cuts after $850,000 revenue loss from canceled events and programs related to the pandemic.

The ballet did not include what his next professional role will be.

Former artistic director Bruce Simpson and associate artistic director Helen Starr will serve as interim artistic advisors while the ballet searches for a permanent replacement.
