Rubbertown Plant Fire Still Burning

A small fire continues to burn at chemical plant in the Rubbertown neighborhood more than 36 hours after an explosion killed two workers.Louisville fire crews plan to go inside Carbide Industries Wednesday afternoon to assess the containment of chemicals within their facilities. Earlier this week, a blast at the west Louisville plant resulted in emergency crews advising residents to stay in their homes and close their windows as a precaution. The incident never posed any chemical danger to neighborhood residents, but several residents were upset that they weren’t quickly notified about the nature of the fire when a phone service created to warn people about chemical incidents was not updated.Mayor Greg Fischer has ordered an upgrade to the line and MetroSafe will take over the responsibility for updating it until a new system can be put in place.A team from the U.S. Chemical Safety Board has also arrived in Louisville to investigate the accident. The plant produces calcium carbide, which is used to manufacture acetylene gas and various other chemicals.
