Eight Horse Barns Damaged by Fire at Fairgrounds

Eight horse barns at the Kentucky State Fairgrounds were damaged this morning in a fire. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the early morning blaze, which destroyed four of the barns.Kentucky State Fair Board President Harold Workman says the next event scheduled to use the horse barns is the North American International Livestock Expo Quarter Horse Show in early November. He says even if the barns aren’t re-built by then, the nature of the show would allow them to continue without them.“There may be some that’s in first that’s in cutting classes, and then they leave and then you may get some of your game horses and pleasure horses, they’re coming and going," says Workman, "and we’re probably using maybe five or six hundred stalls at any one time, so we should be able to work around that if we have to.”Workman says they'll try to get the barns re-built as quickly as possible.“Obviously, we’d like to have them rebuilt by the November event. That may be a little aggressive," says Workman. "They have to really be rebuilt prior to next year’s state fair, when everything is used, and I would think that wouldn’t be a problem getting that done.”This year’s state fair had just wrapped up Sunday night. No horses were in the barn at the time of this morning's blaze.
