Justice Breyer Speaks In Louisville

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer was  in Louisville Tuesday to be interviewed at the University of Louisville's Kentucky Author Forum.    He was also the guest on WFPL's State of Affairs program.Breyer was interviewed for the program at U of L's Brandeis School of Law, where he said he's a longtime admirer of the school's namesake, the late Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis of Louisville."He very much got to the facts, and he understood, indeed, the role of the states, the role of state legislatures, the role of the national legislature and the importance of giving them considerable leeway when deciding a constitutional case.   At the same time, he recognized that the legislature could go too far,"   Breyer said.Breyer also discussed his book, Active Liberty, and what it's like to serve on the Supreme Court.He was appointed to the high court by President Bill Clinton in 1994.

Rick Howlett was midday host and the host of LPM's weekly talk show, "In Conversation." He was with LPM from 2001-2023 and held many different titles, including Morning Edition host, Assignment Editor and Interim News Director. He died in August 2023. Read a remembrance of Rick here.
