Construction is underway on a new firehouse in Louisville's Portland neighborhood. The new Engine 6 station will be located at the intersection of 25th Street and Griffiths Avenue.Fire Chief Greg Frederick says weather permitting, it should be completed by the end of the year."The new station will allow us to accomodate any size fire apparatus within that location, something that we do not have the capabilities of currently," Frederick said. "The existing station on Portland Avenue, for example, will not house the 100 foot aerial ladder that's stationed at Engine 22, Truck Four."The existing station was built in 1903, when the city used a horse-drawn water wagon to fight fires. The Portland fire station is one of two new facilites under construction this year as part of the city's 21st Century Fire Plan.Ground was broken last week on a new station in the Butchertown neighborhood.Construction will begin on a third firehouse in the Beechmont area next year.
