School Board To Discuss Assignment Plan Proposals

The Jefferson County School Board will tonight get the first look at the results of county-wide public meetings about the two proposals for the district’s new student assignment plan. Participants in those meetings and online were invited to share their thoughts or concerns in a survey.Superintendent Sheldon Berman says both proposals are solid."Not only through the development of a plan that builds diversity, but through the very structures we develop, we want to improve and enhance the quality of education for all students, and that’s what the target is, and I believe that both the plans we have prepared do that," said Berman. For tonight’s meeting and the board meeting on the 28th, the student assignment plan is on the agenda as a discussion item. It’s scheduled for a vote on May 12th. The district was forced to re-write its student assignment plan when the old one was ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court last summer.
