Honestly, this may be my favorite show so far. I know I’ve said that before, and I’ll probably say it again, but sometimes it all just links up, the songs make sense, it everything just falls into place without much need for assistance. Instead of too big of an intro, I suggest just hitting the pay button and taking it in. Enjoy!
The Darlings – If This Is Love
I said it in the broadcast version, too, but for some reason I associate this song with the Wreckless Eric tune “ Whole Wide World”. The feel, the grit, the whole thing. Its one of my favorites of the week and a great place to kick it all off with. Grab the digital version and you’re the proud owner of three free tracks.
As Tall As Lions - In Case of Rapture
I’m late to the game on this one because apparently this band has a good, sizable following that have been chomping at the bit for the group to put out a new disc. Its been three years, really only one year more than the usual space between records for any other band, but the band is finally back with the album You Can’t Take It With You. The quartet reportedly had some trouble in crafting this one, but there is enough rock history out there that shows us that more times than not, those situations lead to an artistic masterpiece.
The Temper Trap – Sweet Disposition
Big in Australia but just landing here thanks is a big part to their placement in the film 500 Days of Summer. It’s a mellow tune that hits all the right notes and definitely works well up against the Smiths tunes that centerpiece the rest of the movie’s soundtrack.
Radiohead – These Are My Twisted Words
Talking about causing a stir. Thom takes to the web to profess that the band is done making albums. Then two days later this song mysteriously appears and by Monday it was for sale officially on the band’s website. Is this the new Radiohead model? Regardless, its Radiohead doing Radiohead, which is to say it’s the sounds that made them the bee’s knees, but not exactly innovative. Nothing wrong with it, though. You like Radiohead? Here you go.
Muse – Uprising
Muse is the musical version of the old guy hanging out on the streets with the “The End Is Near” sandwich board draped over him. Though when they do it, it carries an awesome bass line and Freddy Mercury resurrected thru Thom York style vocals. Catch the new disc The Resistance on 9.14.
Mayer Hawthorne – Your Easy Lovin’ Ain’t Pleasin Nothin’
Grab the groove stick and get yer dancin’ shoes on. This DJ turned soul singer has a new disc out, A Strange Arrangement, and is proving that dudes can do the soul throwback, too. Your move Duffy.
The Apples in Stereo – The Bird That You Can’t See
This isn’t really a new track, but its new to most. Apples will be releasing their best of collections, #1 Hits Explosion, on Sept. 1 and have tapped this tune as the spotlight for single’s choice. Great pop music that was too overlooked before. Check it.
Volcano Choir – Island, IS
Justin Vernon, Mr. Bon Iver, probably got lonely out on the road, so he went back home, grabbed his friends in Collections of Colonies of Bees, recorded what became the disc Unmap, and gave the band a proper name – Volcano Choir. Its Justin doing his thing, but this time its more interesting.
The Almighty Defenders – Cone of Light
I am very much looking forward to the release of this disc, a collaboration of members from the Black Lips and King Khan. This 60’s garage throwback is a heck-uva lot of fun. Download it, crank it, dance, and be the hippest kid on the block. You can do so on Sept. 22 nd.
Dead Man’s Bones – My Body’s A Zombie For You
I still listen to this song is disbelief. Lets get it out of the way – this is Ryan Gossling, the dude from The Notebook, but usual celeb fare this ain’t. Well thought out, interesting, unique, and creepy, too. Nothing like having a group of kids yelling out the track’s title over and over. This is the second or third track to see light before the official release, and so far as signs point to go. Oct. 6 th.
The XX – Basic Space
It has a bit of the “In The Waiting Line” vibe of Zero 7 – slow, sexy builder with a steady beat and guy/girl trades.
Cartridge – The Woods (Buffet Libre Remix)
Cartridge has had a good year overseas but a slow start here. Earlier in the year, they gained praise from NME and BBC1, but once their tracked got the remix treatment, the blog kids took higher notice and blasted the song to the top of the reviews. Good for them, good for you.
Golden Silvers – True No. 9 Blues
Rolling Stone just likened them to The Clash, Elvis Costello, and EMF all in the same sentence, so it’s a bit confusing when you pull it up and you get a solid dance tune, but nothing I could hear any of those bands doing (okay, maybe EMF). The album True Romance is ready to make your disco ball spin… now.
