Veto Threat on Senate Education Reform Bill

From Kentucky Public Radio's Tony McVeigh Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear is speaking out against education reforms that are the top legislative priority of Senate Republican leaders. Senate Bill One would do away with the student assessment test known as CATS and replace it with multiple choice tests developed for national use. Governor Beshear says he doesn’t mind tinkering with the Kentucky Education Reform Act of 1990, but Senate Bill One is not the right direction."Public education in Kentucky is not yet where it needs to be. There’s no question about that. But this bill will not help us get there. It should be defeated."Beshear says if lawmakers approve the bill, he will veto it. Two hearings have been held on the measure, but it remains in the Senate Education committee. Supporters say the measure would reduce testing time and costs and provide more time for the arts. The primary sponsor of the bill is Senate President David Williams.
