It seems like the general saying out there right now is "what a week." But we're done with it now, and this one will be fantastic. And futuristic. We won't get ahead of ourselves though. The Week That Was in 5, 4, 3, 2, .........
Spiral Stairs - Maltese Terrier
Scott Kannberg of Payment fame has a new solo disc out under the name of Spiral Stairs. The first taste almost has a 60's spy feel to it, probably for one of the sexier scenes, or at least that's how i imagine it. There's a touch of The Doors in the guitar solo and piano but Mr. Mojo Risin is nowhere close to what Kannberg is doing. I'm really excited about the rest of the disc, The Reel Feel, due out on Oct. 20.
Of Monteral - Computer Blue
I've never been a huge fan of these acide-trip induced fella's, but they were the PERFECT choice for this Prince cover, just one of many on the Spin Magazine curated Purpleish Rain - a full re-imagining of the 80's classic. You'll also find Chairlift, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, and The Twilight Singers pulling their weight on the disc, that you can grab for free through Spin's website.
Spinnerette - Sex Bomb (Adam Freelander remix)
Lets get it out of the way. Lead singer Brody Dale is the wife of Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Holmme. Yep, there is some influence weather she wants there to be or not. When you hear the new Spinnerette disc (out now), the guitars sound like they could be Mr. Stone Age himself, which is why this Freeland remix is so welcome. With all the beats and mixing around, it lets Brody shine on her own for a minute, and adds the dance feel that Freelander is dominating the dance floors with right now. Wheat - HOTT
I like these guys. I say that, because there isn't a lot of reason to. Their sound is dated and, on paper, probably belongs on an adult contemporary station, but there is something about them that grabs at artist credibility and even keeps the indie kids around and bouncing. Good for them. The new single, which stands for Half of the Time, is easily singable and may be stuck in your head for the rest of the day. White Ink, Black Ink is out on July 21. Don't be afraid. its perfectly okay.
The Avett Brothers - I and Love and You
One of the most charming qualities of The Avetts is their honesty and sense of family. It worked so well in Murder In The City, Shame, and the rest of their near decade long catalog, so why stop now? "I and Love and You" may be one of their sappier, heart-on-yer-sleeve ballads, but its the Bro's doing what they do best, and with this one, shooting ever more closer to the mainstream. Its about time. Its also about time to call your mom, brother, and sister after this one. And whoever Brooklyn is, the city or the girl, let the boy in. He's asked so nicely, so many times. Set your targets to Sept. 29 for this one.
Sunset Rubdown - Idiot Heart
I'm reminded of either and Bryan Adams or Rick Springfield song by the opening guitar, but that image is quickly dissolved once the Interpol style vocals seep in. This song lasts a bit over six minutes, which is interesting only in the fact that it feels like that could have done it in three. But when you come from an indie rock buzzer like Wolf Parade, you really have the ability to spread your creative muscle without having some web-head (read: me) telling you if its good or not, but they seem to have figured that out on their own. If you're a fan, pick up Dragonslayer. Bloc Party - One More Chance
They made their mark a few years ago with the song "I Still Remember," one of my favorites of that year. And while evolution hasn't been their game plan, their consistency should speak for something. Good for mod-style dance parties, you can grab this single on August 10. Mando Diao - Dance With Somebody
My favorite of the week. I feel a little shameful on that one, only because the insanely catchy chorus has vocals that hint, even if just a little, at some of the muscle rock from this decade. Regardless, I haven't stopped singing this one to the point where my neighbors are now singing it while doing yardwork. Its that kind of friend-maker. Of course, being from Sweden, big hooks are in their blood. It must be nice not having the choice - born in Sweden? Predisposed to writing great songs. Give Me Fire is out now.
Yim Yames - Behind That Locked Door
I didn't spell it wrong. Jim James from My Morning Jacket goes all Whole Nine Yards when releasing solo work, as he does here covering George Harrison for an EP that will be out next month, appropriately titled Tribute To. It was recorded back in 2001, before the Jacket took over the world and caused every clean cut boy to attach a wooly mammoth to their face - summer be damned. On a side note, also be waiting for another project featuring Yimmy - an EP collaboration with Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore. Punk Grrrrrl music! I was tired of you for a second, but I'm pretty happy to see you now. And even better, this one totally has a Josie kind of feel. Happy time angry music. Cause that's punk rock. :-) Seriously though, when the rest of this Rhode Island crew are sleeping on couches, he'll be providing the couch in his High Rise.
Black Moth Super Rainbow - Twin of Myself (Go Team! Remix)
Wow. Let The Go Team! remix your track and the web kids go nuts. This one had more posts than any other track this week. From the album Eating Us, it had an honest following beforehand, but they can thank to beats for pulling it into the ethers. Download it just about anywhere.
Beck - Sunday Morning
Great concept here that will keep us guessing with excitement for the whole summer, if not year. Beck gathers a group of his friends into the recording studio and then, without rehearsal, covers a complete album of his choice. Results so far have been spectacular from what we've heard from this Velvet Underground set. Pay attention to his website, which is where he'll be releasing the tunes one at a time. next up? Rumor is Sonic Youth's EVOL. Noah & The Whale - The First Days of Spring
It'll feel long, but the payoff is in the last minute. A grand, epic buildup that culminates in what rock n roll is all about, or can be about, with a little moxy. N&TW aren't as optimistic as usual with "Spring" but they are taking chances and promises the rest of the disc follows suit. Find out for yourself in August when the album from which this title track stems from hit stores.
