USA Cycling Amateur Road Nationals Coming To Louisville

Courtesy USA Cycling

The USA Cycling Amateur Road Nationals will be in Louisville this weekend. And amid safety concerns, the criterium course has been relocated from Norton Commons to Shawnee Park.

The event features an individual time trial in Taylorsville on Thursday, road races in Cherokee Park on Friday and Saturday, and a criterium on Sunday.

A criterium is a short-circuit race featuring multiple laps within a set time-limit.

In an email announcement on Tuesday to registered athletes, USA Cycling national events coordinator Tara McCarthy said that the demand for entry spots prompted the organization to seek a different venue with the capacity for larger fields. McCarthy could not be reached for further comment.

The previous location for the criterium, Norton Commons -- a residential and commercial development -- announced via Facebook that it could not meet the new USA Cycling demands without negatively impacting its neighbors and businesses.

The course has been moved to Shawnee Park and will close a segment of Southwestern Parkway. The course maps are here.

Athletes aged 14 and up qualified through points rankings and meet minimum eligibility criteria.

Louisville was selected to host the 2016 and 2017 Amateur Road National Championships last year. The city played host to the UCI Cyclocross World Championships in 2013 at Eva Bandman Park.
