The Louisville Film Society has announced the lineup for their 8th Annual Flyover Film Festival. The festival -- July 24-29 -- will celebrate Kentucky’s heritage in filmmaking, past and present.
Soozie Eastman is the executive director of the Film Society.
“We want to highlight all the venues we have all across our community who have been supportive of the Film Society, while we premiere films here in Louisville and really focus on a lot of the great creative film work that has come out of our Commonwealth,” Eastman says.
This year, the festival will host events at The Kentucky Center, Speed Cinema, Baxter Avenue Theaters and Copper & Kings.
Here's the list of films you can expect to see:
'The Seer: A Portrait of Wendell Berry'
Sunday, July 24 at 5:30 p.m.
Bomhard Theater at Kentucky Center
This film, which Eastman describes as “a thoughtful documentary on someone our state holds so dear,” is a cinematic portrait of the changing landscapes and shifting values of rural America in the era of industrial agriculture, as seen through the mind’s eye of Kentucky author Wendell Berry. The film was a hit at SXSW, and this will be its Kentucky premiere.
'Harry Caudill: A Man of Courage'
Monday, July 25 at 7:30 p.m.
Speed Cinema
“Harry Caudill: A Man of Courage” was a Kentucky author whose writings -- especially in his book “Night Comes to the Cumberlands” -- exposed the desperate poverty in eastern Kentucky. Published in 1963, the book helped President Lyndon Johnson implement his War on Poverty program. This is the film’s world premiere.
'Bear with Us, Kentucky'
Tuesday, July 26 at 7:30 p.m.
Baxter Avenue Theaters
In a lighter turn, “Bear with Us, Kentucky” is an oddball comedy about a vicious bear derailing an otherwise romantic marriage proposal. Louisvillians will recognize hometown actor and Walden Theatre alum, Collin Smith.
'Stripes'
Thursday, July 28 at 8:45 p.m.
Copper & Kings
This classic army comedy -- which starred Bill Murray, John Candy and Harold Ramis -- is one of the more well-known films created in Kentucky (with lots of screen time dedicated to Fort Knox). To celebrate its 35th anniversary, the Louisville Film Society is holding a special outdoor screening at Copper & Kings Distillery.
'Sound in Motion: Louisville Music on Stage & Screen'
Friday, July 29 at 8:30 p.m.
Belvedere Lawn
This show, which serves as the finale for the festival, is a mixed media presentation of live music interspersed with short mini-documentaries on local musicians created by the Louisville Orchestra and WFPK.
