During a speech at the National Rifle Association convention in Louisville on Friday, Donald Trump called Hillary Clinton the most “anti-gun” candidate to ever run for president.
Trump said that Clinton wants to “abolish” the Second Amendment and, if elected, would appoint anti-gun Supreme Court justices.
“The Second Amendment is under a threat like never before," he said. "Crooked Hillary Clinton is the most anti-gun, anti-Second Amendment candidate ever to run for office."
Clinton has never called for abolishing the Second Amendment but has pushed for increased background checks and closing the “gun show loophole.”
Trump called for the elimination of gun-free zones, saying that if concert-goers had been armed during November attacks on the Bataclan Theater in Paris, not as many people would have died.
“I promise there wouldn’t have been 130 people killed,” Trump said. “It might not have happened because if they knew there were guns in the room, it might not have happened.”
Trump's support of gun rights issues has been questioned by some Republicans — in his book The America We Deserve, Trump said he’d support an assault weapons ban. On Friday, Trump said he’s been a member of the NRA for a “long time” and bragged about how many guns his sons own.
“They have so many rifles and so many guns that even sometimes I get a little bit concerned; I say ‘that’s a lot,’” he said.
Gov. Matt Bevin and U.S. Sen. Rand Paul also made speeches at the event.
Bevin said the right to bear arms is “under attack” in the country. He challenged attendees to go to the polls to vote against Clinton.
“We are under assault from regulation and liberal ideology and we are the ones that have to stand in the gap,” he said.
Bevin has been hesitant to endorse Trump for president, but at one point called Trump “the next president of the United States.”
Like Trump, Sen. Rand Paul called for getting rid of gun-free zones at the event.
“I think one way to try to avoid these senseless killings would be to announce — once and for all time — that no school, no movie theater, no supermarket in America will be left defenseless,” Paul said.
Ironically, the event was a gun-free zone, per Secret Service regulations. Attendees were allowed to carry guns in other areas of the NRA convention.
