Shawnee Residents Seek More Information On Basin Project

Residents who live near Shawnee Park want the Metropolitan Sewer District to provide more information about an underground storage basin set to be built at the west Louisville park.

The basin is part of a long-term effort to decrease overflows of a mix of rainwater and sewage into local waterways, including the Ohio River.

Some neighbors say MSD hasn't kept them updated about the project.

“One of outrages from the local residents near the park in Chickasaw, Shawnee, Portland, and really the city at large, is the fact that MSD has not engaged with the community properly on this development,” said Donovan Taylor, who lives in Chickasaw, during a recent Metro Council meeting.

MSD spokesman Steve Tedder said the agency held a public meeting in March and has been reaching out to community leaders and residents.

“We sent out thousands of notices in the area," he said. "With this, we need to continue to keep having the meetings."

Taylor said the past meetings were not helpful, though. “It was not well-informed and promoted in the community, where residents could really participate and be involved and engaged in the project,” he said.

Tedder said MSD had planned a subsequent meeting, but there was a delay because design work took longer than expected. He said officials plan to hold another meeting within 30 days.

No date and time have been set.
