Kentucky Opera board president Bill Blodgett will lead the day-to-day operations of the organization while it searches for new leadership following the unexpected death last month of general director David Roth.
In a press conference Tuesday morning, Blodgett said the Kentucky Opera's fans should feel confident and optimistic about the future of the institution.
“The Kentucky Opera is in good shape, on sound footing, and looks forward to a wonderful season," he said. "We’re pleased to have an organization that ended with a small surplus last year … we’ve got good developmental plans and community support.”
The board's executive committee is expected to meet this week to begin developing a plan for longer-term interim leadership and also a permanent director. Blodgett said a Transition Advisory Committee has been formed, primarily consisting of past directors and officers, as well as community stakeholders. The first meeting of that committee will likely be held next week.
The opening production of "Macbeth" has already been cast and will enter rehearsals later this month.
All social and educational events related to the season will go on as planned.
“I’d say just what David Roth said -- the show will go on,” Blodgett said. “We are fortunate to have had a great leader, who has put together his artistic vision for the next several years.”
Roth had led the Kentucky Opera since 2006. He is credited with guiding the opera into financial stability while also making bold decisions.
