Playwright Lucas Hnath returns to the Humana Festival of New American Plays at Actors Theatre of Louisville this month with a commissioned play. Directed by artistic director Les Waters, "The Christians" opens Thursday in the Pamela Brown Auditorium. "The Christians" features an American evangelical pastor as he prepares to deliver a sermon that will challenge the foundations of his congregation's beliefs. Hnath’s Actors Theatre credits include 2010's "The Courtship of Anna Nicole Smith," staged by the apprentice company, last year’s high-flying Humana Festival apprentice showcase “Sleep Rock Thy Brain” and 2012’s Humana Festival mainstage production “Death Tax,” which won a Steinberg New Play Citation from the American Theatre Critics Association. Hnath spoke with WFPL's Erin Keane about writing about faith and religion.
