Kentucky National Guard medics will gain experience by spending time in the University of Kentucky Hospital emergency room. It’s part of a larger collaboration between UK and the National Guard.Emergency Medicine Department Chair Roger Humphries says some 150 medics will follow doctors who treat serious injuries.“It’s not unlikely that the medics would not be involved in medical care in their civilian jobs, but this is their job in the National Guard," he says. "So, for example, if they haven’t seen blood before, the battlefield is not the place to be seeing that for the very first time. That makes it an even more traumatic experience for the medic.”Humphries says the hospital experience will also help medics who find themselves caring for victims of natural disasters.(Image via Shutterstock)
