Find Out How UofL, UK and Others Spend on Athletics, Academics With New Knight Database

The Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics has gone live with a massive database on college athletics and academic spending. The database includes information on all the larger schools  in the region, including the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky.For each school, you'll find how much is spent per full-time(equivalent)student, institutional funding per athlete, and specific data for football. I screen-grabbed the most basic data for UofL, UK, Western Kentucky—Kentucky's three schools that compete in college football's top division—and Indiana University. They're posted at the bottom of this story. Here are links to each team's page, which will have much more data:

You can also find other data, like how much each team spends on coaches.The Knight Commission is an organization that pushes for reforms that emphasize academics and, generally, opposes the commercialization of college sports.Of the database, the commission said: The primary goal of the database is to enable administrators, researchers, policymakers, taxpayers, fans, and others to compare trends in spending on core academic activities with spending on athletics in public Division I institutions. Trends in institutional funding for athletics through student fees and other institutional sources are also provided.The commission notes that the data provided comes from multiple public reports.William E. “Brit” Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland and co-chairman of the Commission.In a statement, commission co-chair William E. "Brit" Kirwan said the "current trajectory of spending is unsustainable."“We already see levels of spending at some universities that require them to divert substantial resources from their core academic responsibilities," added Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland.
