Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Donna Hargens will announce details of a competition to create a new JCPS school Tuesday.
Earlier this year, JCPS was granted District of Innovation status by the Kentucky Board of Education. It was one of only four school districts across the state to earn this label. These districts are allowed to waive certain education department regulations that other schools must follow.( Click here to see which waivers JCPS recieved and why.)As part of its application, JCPS wants to create a School of Innovation and do so through community input. This means the best innovators with the best ideas for improving student achievement may be supported in seeing their vision come to fruition. The school of innovation concept was developed to give JCPS another school turnaround option for its lowest achieving schools. Currently there are four turnaround models that schools are allowed to use, but some have complained that the options limit schools’ capabilities.JCPS says the new ideas could be implemented as early as the 2015-2016 school year.
