Indiana Gov. Mike Pence Backs Education Board on School Grades

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is supporting the State Board of Education's bid to shift calculation of school accountability grades from the Democrat-led Department of Education to legislative analysts.Pence spokeswoman Christy Denault said Tuesday that Pence doesn't believe any state laws were broken when the board crafted a letter asking top Republican lawmakers to make the change.Democratic schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz filed a lawsuit Tuesday charging that the board violated Indiana's Open Door Law when it failed to advertise the meeting at which it drafted the latter to House Speaker Brian Bosma and Senate Pro Tempore David Long.Ritz chairs the state board but says she didn't learn of the letter until after it had been delivered to Bosma and Long. The lawmakers signed off on the move Friday.
