Photos: Fairness Campaign Rallies Over DOMA Ruling

The Fairness Campaign held a rally downtown Wednesday to celebrate the Supreme Court's ruling declaring the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional.Celebrators carried signs and chanted, but there was a reminder of the challenges LGBT Kentuckians still face, and several attendees blasted the Supreme Court for striking a key provision of the Voting Rights Act in a decision released yesterday. The state bans same-sex marriage. It would take a change to the state constitution for Kentuckians to get married and enjoy the federal benefits the high court says they would be entitled to. And many questions remain over how couples that were legally married in other states can use those benefits while living in a state that doesn't recognize their unions.Fairness Campaign director Chris Hartman says there are more immediate challenges. He told WFPL's Joseph Lord the campaign is focused on guiding the passage of a law banning discrimination based on sexual orientation. Currently, Louisville, Lexington, Covington and Vicco have such laws, and the Fairness Campaign is supporting more of them, as well as a statewide version.
