English language arts test scores have dropped in southern Indiana schools as they continue lagging behind their peers, according to preliminary ISTEP+ exam results issued by the Indiana Department of Education today.
Greater Clark County Schools Superintendent Andrew Melin says it's interesting that English scores dropped in the region and he couldn't provide a guess as to why.βI donβt know what the reason is for that. But not only did Greater Clark drop but our neighbors in Clarksville, West Clark and New-Albany and Floyd, also their passage rates in language arts dropped," he tells WFPL.
Statewide, English language arts scores remained roughly the same over last year with around 79.4 percent of third through eighth grade students passing the exam.On the other hand, math scores in West Clark, Greater Clark County and Clarksville school districts improved, following a slight increase in the state average too.Statewide there were small gains made overall with 73.5 percent of students passing both English and math. While most of the southern Indiana school districts in the region arenβt yet at or above the state average, the New Albany-Floyd County School District continues to post above average marks.The ISTEP+ results were released later than usual this year following technical computer glitches experienced by the testing company CTB/McGraw-Hill that halted exams momentarily in the spring.The release of science scores is expected in late October.Click here to access the Indiana Department of Education's website to find more on your school.
