The Louisville Film Society's fifth annual Flyover Film Festival opens tonight with two films with local connections and a poetic Western crime film that's been garnering buzz on the festival circuit. The film festival runs through Sunday, with most events happening at the Clifton Center (2117 Payne St.). Tonight's films include the short documentaries "The Potter's Field" and "Gatewood." "The Potter's Field" (7 p.m.) follows a group of Louisville high school students who volunteer at funeral services for the homeless and indigent. "Gatewood," (7:45 p.m.) directed by Louisville native Chris Iovenko, spotlights perennial gubernatorial candidate Gatewood Galbraith, who ran for governor of Kentucky on a pro-marijuana platform five times before his death in 2012.Tonight's feature is "Ain't Them Bodies Saints," starring Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck as an outlaw couple on a crime spree separated when one is imprisoned. The film debuted at Sundance this year, and made critic's week at the Cannes Film Festival. A talkback with director David Lowery follows the screening. The festival continues with screenings Thursday and Friday evenings and all day Saturday and Sunday. On Friday, director Mike Elsherif will be a guest on Byline (1-2 p.m.) to discuss his film "City Strays," shot on location in Louisville, which screens Sunday at 1:30 p.m.Festival passes are on sale in advance, and tickets to individual films are also available.
