Since the campaign for control of the Kentucky House started, Democrats and supportive outside groups have used outgoing Senate President David Williams as an attack on GOP candidates.For weeks, the outside group Kentucky Family Values has sent out political mail attempting to link GOP incumbents and challengers as "votes for Williams" in Frankfort. But now that Williams is set to become a judge,Republicans say the attacks aren't relevant.“Well I believe this is an issue that fell flat well before the governor decided to appoint David Williams to the bench. This is an issue that never had any ground,” said Joe Burgan, a GOP spokesman.Kevin Hable, chairman of Kentucky Family Values, said he could not comment on the attacks because he had not seen them, despite being in charge of overseeing the group.Hable also said he was not in charge of the day-to-day operations and could not locate contact information or a name for the person who was in charge. Burgan said the attacks show Democrats don't have any accomplishments to run on.
"They don’t have a record," Burgan said. "The record they have for 91 years isn’t one they want to stand by. So they resorted to these sort of personal attacks that in light of Gov. Beshear’s appointment are no longer relevant,” Burgan says.
Election Day is one week away, on Nov. 6. Republicans are hoping to win a net of 10 seats to take control of the state House.
