JCPS Community Relations Committee Half Full
Jefferson County Public Schools is extending communication with the public through a new committee created by Superintendent Donna Hargens. “[It’s] really a way to include more voices and to also include people who are key communicators who will leave this meeting and be able to respond to others who ask them questions,” said board member Linda Duncan.The board approved Superintendent Donna Hargens’ initiative earlier this year. All seven board members can appoint up to three citizens to the Community Relations Committee. So far there are only 13 on the committee, according to JCPS staff.The committee will help the district reach one of its four main goals in its new Vision 2015 strategic plan. Those four goals are increased learning, graduation and post-secondary preparedness, more stakeholder and community involvement and staff and school support.The Community Relations Committee will meet quarterly to discuss key issues and give feedback.“Lots of times we have people out there who we have not included and so they can’t continue to answer people’s questions the way that I think would be helpful," said Duncan.Appointed citizens will serve on the committee for one to two-year terms. Some are parents, others are past board members.In the first committee meeting last month, the group discussed the state’s new accountability measures, the results of which should be released in a matter of weeks.The next meeting is scheduled later this year.
