Even though the presidential nomination process is effectively over, Kentuckians can still vote for candidates other than Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama in tomorrow's primary.Republicans can cast ballots for Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul, even though they're no longer in the running. And Democrats will be able to choose 'uncommitted' instead of President Obama.But University of Louisville political scientist Dewey Clayton says those other names don't really matter.“I really don’t see any surprises at this point because primarily we don’t have competitive races going on at this point, in the Republican primary or in the Democratic primary," he says.
Both parties' candidates will be formally nominated at conventions later this year. Clayton says with other names still floating around, there could be some Republicans who vote for a dropped out candidate. But the majority will likely back Romney.“Yes there will probably be some Tea Party folk who probably will support Santorum," he says. "I don’t know if that’s going to be enough to overtake the sort of establishment that would more than likely be moving toward and supporting Mitt Romney.”Below the presidential contest, many congressional, state and local races will appear on the ballot in most of the commonwealth.
