NuLu Chosen for Neighborhood Sustainability Consultation

Louisville’s NuLu neighborhood will be getting professional design consultation in the new year. The neighborhood was among eight nationwide chosen for assistance.Sometime in the spring, consultants with environmental non-profit Global Green will come to Louisville and evaluate NuLu’s existing infrastructure. The goal will be to provide recommendations to improve the neighborhood’s sustainability.Green Urbanism Director Walker Wells says NuLu was a great candidate for the assistance because of the neighborhood’s recent progress.“The proposal said, ‘these things are happening in NuLu, and we think you guys could come and help us make the most of it and hopefully show us some other options for how the neighborhood could be improved even further,” he said.Wells says he was impressed with what’s already going on in the neighborhood, including work done by the Metropolitan Sewer District in the area to improve the streetscape and reduce storm water runoff.“What we’re able to do is to say, ‘well, if that’s already going on, what are some opportunities to weave in some other strands of neighborhood sustainability?’” Wells said. “Which would include walkability, bikeability, transit access, neighborhood shops, access to local food, provision of affordable housing.”Global Green will be evaluating NuLu based on the newly-developed Neighborhood LEED standard, and identifying ways the community can build on its existing progress.
