The U.S. Postal Service has begun the public comment process on the possibility of consolidating its nine mail processing centers in Kentucky. One proposal being studied would move the Elizabethtown sorting operation to Louisville, and the Lexington operation to Louisville or Knoxville, Tennessee.Spokesman David Walton says the Postal Service is looking to cuts costs to offset a decline in mail volume."More and more people are paying their bills online. About ten years ago, less than five percent of people paid their bills online. Now, about 50-percent of people do that." Officials estimate that moving the Lexington processing center would save about $9 million annually, and eliminate more than 180 jobs at the site. Moving the Elizabethtown operation would save about $283,000 and eliminate seven jobs. Public hearings on the proposals will be held tonight from 7:00-9:00 at the Fayette County Public Schools' Central Office in Lexington and Tuesday from 7:00-9:00pm at T.K. Stone Middle School in Elizabethtown. A final decision is expected in February or March.(Information for this story also came from Lisa Autry, Kentucky Public Radio)
