Jeffersonville City Council Approves Funding for Raises

The Jeffersonville City Council has unanimously voted this week to appropriate annual pay raises of $1,000 for themselves. If approved, the council's compensation would increase from $12,000 to $13,000 dollars a year. The council has not seen any pay raises since 2008, and some outgoing council members say the proposed increases are fair.Jeffersonville will also undergo changes to its government next year. It will become a second class city due to a population increase of over 45,000 people, according to recent census data. The reclassification requires the city to choose a council president who will preside over meetings. The president will receive $15,000 dollars per year, under the proposal. The council must wait 30 days before it can vote to approve the raises. Voting is likely to happen in December, prior to the start of a new term. The council has the opportunity to lower the proposed raise before making a final vote, but it cannot approve any more than what is has proposed.
