Earlier this week, a Kentucky judge ruled that state social workers failed to protect 9-year-old Amythz "Amy" Dye, who was fatally beaten earlier this year by her 17-year-old adoptive brother. After the murder, acting on tips from the community, local paper the Todd County Standard filed an open records request with the Cabinet for Health and Family Services to see if any allegations of abuse had been filed prior to her death. The request was denied, then the paper sued to have the records released.Todd County Standard editor Ryan Craig joined us on State of the News to talk about the struggle to access the files, what was brought to light when they were released, and what this story says about flaws in Kentucky's child welfare system.
