The Spirit of Jefferson is ending rides this Thursday across the Ohio River. Mayor Greg Fischer calls the shuttle an innovative option for commuters, but the ferry hasn’t been a popular option since the Sherman Minton Bridge closed. The Spirit of Jefferson is taking its last rush-hour ride this Thursday. CEO Linda Harris says the 300 person ferry has only been carrying around 150 riders daily. And at $1 a ride that doesn’t make up the $700 a day it costs to operate.Harris says many riders are people who just want to take advantage of being on the Ohio River on a boat, but that’s still not enough causal riders. The ferry transports riders between Riverfront Park in Jeffersonville to the 4th Street Wharf in Louisville. Harris previously told WFPL that the ferry could continue with alternative funding.
