The Kentucky secretary of state is predicting low turnout for the general election, but state officials are still encouraging residents to register to vote before the deadline expires Tuesday.During the May primary, voter turnout was an abysmal 10 percent and many expect a similar result due to the wide margin in the governor’s race. Secretary of State Elaine Walker says the initial data shows turnout will once again be low for the fall election.“Regrettably I think the voter turnout for the general election will is going to be relatively low. We haven’t gotten all the data together that we need to use to make a projection, but my hope is people turn this around and say that they are actually going to go to the polls and vote on November 8,” she says.In Jefferson County, voter applications can be dropped off at any Motor Vehicle Branch service center of the county clerk’s office or at the Jefferson County Election Center at 810 Barret Avenue.Walker says it is also the deadline for registered voters to change their address, switch political parties or update their name. And her office is coming up with initiatives to encourage higher interest this fall."What I’m encouraging people to do is to vote in honor of a veteran. They can get a special button in their county clerk’s office—a beautiful red, white and blue button—and they can put the name of a veteran on that button," says Walker.
